Herald Hops is a relatively new dwarf variety bred at Wye College in England. Herald was one of the first dwarf varieties introduced into this wonderful world of brewing and was registered in 1996. This variety is a sister of Pioneer, and Pilgrim hops, which all came from the same era of the program.
Herald Hops is a dual use hops that is appropriate for anytime throughout the brewing process. With an alpha acid rating at 11.9%-12.8%, Herald is known for its clean, strong bitterness. At the same time one of the notable characters is the citrus bouquet, with notes of orange and grapefruit. This aroma comes from the high composition of myrcene oil. This variety has relatively high co-humulone, which some brewers shy away from.
As with Herald Hops, most dwarf varieties do not compete with some other varieties on the yield throughout a season. Herlad Hops yields between 1200-1250 lbs/acre. The large size compact cones are ready for harvest early in the season. One of the assets of Herald Hops is its tolerance to Verticillium Wilt, Powdery Mildew, as well as Downy Mildew.
